Lill from COSTA RICA writes: "...Hi Chris: As a biology and zoology student most of the work I do involves going out into nature and catching animals and generally ruining their day by manhandling them and spending lots of time talking about them like there not there. In Panama there is a very cute species of frog called Dendrobates pumilio. It comes in all sorts of cute colors. I have attached a photo of my friend Aaron using the frogs as bling." CLICK FOR BLING.

is anyone else a little disturbed for the poor frog who's in a plastic bag?
Posted by: Sarah | March 20, 2009 at 10:38 AM
Sarah, I was just thinking that! :(

I was starting to wonder if anyone else noticed that the frog is in a plastic bag. Why is that, exactly? ...it seems, you know... cruel.
Posted by: Katie C | March 20, 2009 at 10:55 AM
I submitted the photos and put the frogs in the baggies. It is standard herpetological practice to put small frogs in those tiny ziploc bags meant for drugs. They were in there for the short time it took to weigh and photograph them. No frogs were hurt in our research.

I hope you left a little drugs in the bags. Least you could do.

Posted by: bertie | March 20, 2009 at 05:39 PM
they are poison dart frogs. this species is not particularly toxic to the touch. you wouldn't want to eat one though.
