it's not so rare, kelly. it just means both parents were orange furry purry things. i have had two orange female furry purry things so far in my life. there is still room for about 1700 more.
Kelly, it's the orange and white pied cats that are genetically nearly always male (the females usually come out tortie). Ginger tabbies are both gender. There's likely a lot of info that'll come up in a search about it--it's something to do with a funny chromosome, etc.
